This may be obvious, but how many times does my husband park his car outside our house (due to a project in the garage)over night only to leave his garage door remote mounted on his visor. We have talked about it several times....sure hope he remembers in the future.
Also, this is up north but there was a robbery ring doing something similar as mentioned. They would break in to a car in a parking lot while a person was at work....say 8:00 am ...look at the address of the person in the glove box, drive to their home (sometimes they took the remote to the garage) and rob them. The victim had no idea until they got off of work.
