I had some hackers from a couple Asian countries trying to access my email account about two months ago. I had to change my password at least 4 times before all that nonsense ended. I didn't have to know all of the stuff you say they need. Seems really odd to me. Gmail, in my opinion, is by far the best email service around. I've been with them since I was a beta tester pre-startup. The easiest way may be to open another gmail account and email everyone you know to let them to know your new address.
