David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps - Smarthistory
It is probably an
axiom of artists that they not insult the hands that pay them, but to many David's portrait of Napoleon crossing the Alps is a
feeble attempt to hide just how much David had to make Bonaparte look like an Emperor. Napoleon had a perfect
outlet for his propaganda in David's work. At this stage of the Little Corporal's political career, very few people who wanted to stay alive would have
blurted out what they really thought of David's 1800 painting.
