I did further reading online. He was one of the "Angola Three" Black Panthers. Presently, at the moment, he is gravely ill and dying of liver cancer. They did transfer him to a locked hospital room. According to various statements by the warden at the time, in poor English, he felt that he would have a bigger mess on his hands with the Black Panthers, etc. if he let the guy free. Two of the others were set free....after appeal; ditto long time in solitary confinement. Herman's initial arrest and charge was for robbery. Once in prison, one half blind prisoner and another "snitch" prisoner said they saw him kill the young 24 year old guard........so that's why he's in solitary. Not for the robbery but the supposed murder which he denied. Who knows?

I read further that in the past the only way out of Angola is via death.
So, whether capital punishment or a slow death by solitary confinement, not much different.

Again, only found about about this prisoner being in solitary for 40 years from the Public Broadcasting Station.........it was a female artist's documentary along with the male film maker............
