We choose linoleum because of the ease of care, warmth(it is not a ceramic tile cemented onto a potentially cold cement slab), and cushioning. It is very easy on your feet, very easy to clean(no grout lines to get dirty), and looks great. We are very happy with our choice and it wasn't a monetary decision although I think the linoleum is cheaper--not really sure.
I have stayed in places with that scraped wood floor you were talking about and really liked it a lot. I guess the only bad thing about it is it may show dust and be hard to keep clean. We had Brazilian Cherry in our last house and it was constant maintenance.
