If he had not cared a lot about the dog, he wouldn't have been taking him out with himself in the car....he'd had left it chained up in a hot yard where the dog could've died, too. Also, since he was looking at rain approaching, it was maybe a cooler day and he underestimated the heat buildup.

In my mind, it doesn't follow that someone who takes their dog with them in the car would leave him in a hot yard at home instead. People who leave their dogs chained in a hot yard (or even a cool yard) aren't the type to take them along with them.

What does make sense is that this person is not well-read or has no situational awareness, or he would have known how quickly it gets broiling hot in a car in summer. I mean, what dog owner doesn't know this???
