Would you consider track lighting instead of a chandelier? Three reasons that I would not have thought of had I not seen it: (1) It eliminates the concern about "centering" a light fixture. (2) It allows the dining room walls to be used for display of striking items without a chandelier hanging in the middle of the line of vision. (3) It is much more flexible in terms of how you want to direct the lighting than any chandelier would be.

There are track lighting systems that allow placement of the connection to the junction box in the ceiling wherever you want it and not necessarily centered, which would eliminate your need to close up one junction box, finish the ceiling, and install a new box which must be done through the attic (not the simplest undertaking).
