Being much better off than my parents, we used to bring our kids down to Florida to visit their grandparents and get in some beach time every year.
We tried a NJ beach vacation while two of the three were still in college. We rented a condo on the Wildwood boardwalk in August, expecting it to be great beach weather. We were wrong. We got pounded with remnants of a hurricane and never saw temps over 70 until the last day right before we left.
We have had the same experience in the FL Keys. Not a hurricane, but horrendous wind and very cold. It's always a crap shoot when you pick a date and rent a place. Some years the dragon wins.
