I've had a sleep number bed since the mid 90's. I had back problems before I got it and had very few espisodes since, usually after traveling and getting a soft mattress somewhere. Not only can you adjust the firmness of the sleep number but if the foam edges begin to sag after sitting on it repeatedly to put on shoes, you can just replace the foam edges, not the entire mattress. If you don't like a firm mattress you might not want to get it. If you keep it soft you might feel the divider in the middle, if you keep it firm it is difficult to find. To me the advantage is being able to keep a firm mattress over time while traditional mattresses begin to sag and most of the high end mattresses can't be flipped over.
