That's a reason that the sod should be removed under the entire canopy in order to have the right fertilizer reach those roots.

If there's sod "turf" above the roots and the turf fertilizer reaches the palm roots it does little to help it may harm the palm.

Now if you add brick wall around it smaller than the expected growth canopy size again you can have a problem.

Look around your neighborhood you will likely see a canopy on a palm 10-15 feet in diameter and a bed below in stacked rock 6 feet around.

It don't work and many landscapers install them that way.
