It takes a few seconds for the eyesight to adjust to the darkness in the tunnel, and it only takes a second to hit somebody who's close to the entrance.....and not facing the entering carts so you can jump out of harm's way if need be.

I've been doing it for over five years with no incident because I'm alert and I've been running for over 30 years. I also coached at a HS level. The reason I run with traffic (in the tunnel) is they can see me. If I'm at the entrance so are they, right behind me. Works well. Picture it. Picture going INTO a tunnel and meeting a runner around the corner. Not a good idea. There is no place to get out of the way. Pedestrians should stay away from blind curves. As soon as the curve is gone, cross over to face traffic. Works well.
Besides, the tunnels are not that long. When I run in, I usually pick up my speed in and push the hill on the outside. Most of the time carts are a non issue. I've had many make positive comments to me coming out of the Caroline Tunnel going towards Caroline because I usually always beat the carts up the hill. I figure it's best for both of us.
