I had the same problem with my iPad and wanted to leave my router in the front bedroom (used as an office) so I bought another router with DD-WRT firmware installed. This firmware has a few advantages and allowed me to set up the router as a "repeater/bridge" so I have it located in the living area by the television. I works as a repeater but also I have the TV and a couple of older gadgets hard wired into it.
I regularly test the connection speed and usually get my full 10mbps at the opposite side of the house and on the lanai.
I have had this for over 2 years now and it's worked fine.
I did change my service to try "Prism" (18 months ago) and they could not get my router to work with their "gateway" at that time so I changed to DirecTV and Century Link for Internet and everything has been fine using a regular modem.
