I think it is unnecessary and childish. If people would use caution and look in the mirrors at the end of the tunnels, there should be no need to honk horns. Just today, I went through a tunnel where 2 carts following each other and overloaded with kids, honked their horns through the entire tunnel. It hurts your ears. Plus, if you happen to live next to a tunnel, can you imagine what the honking sounds like if it went on all day? Let's grow up and act our age.
