If I had installed one, and it was after the softener, it would have caught all the crud coming into the house. Sure, it would have plugged up the filters, more than likely, but it would have let me know immediately that I had a problem.
20/20 hindsight is such a wonderful thing. Still may look into putting a filter on the output side of the softener. It is just inside the garage, and filters look like they can be mounted right on the wall.
