What some of the rental cars have done recently is to charge the daily rate for the transponder only on the days that you use it. Even with the transponder in place, you always have the option to just pay at each booth.
I would just buy the $5 transponder for myself and put it on credit card feed on the website (feeds increments of money you indicate.....I have mine feed $25 when needed).
The tolls are reduced price by using the transponder (your own, not rental car company's).
