We have the $5.00 stick on type. Recently we had the windows tinted and I forgot about the transponder. When we picked our car up, we found out that they had scraped the transponder off and attached it to the back of the mirror. I asked if it would still work and was told that it would. We've been to Orlando and WDW several times and so far so good.
You do not need a Florida license to register the transponder. If you own a car anywhere, you can use that tag number. We had a transponder when we had a VA license plate on the previous car we had. You can use your home state tag number and then use the transponder in the rental car. Just make sure you don't permanently attach it to the rental.
