Reading does contribute to excellence in spelling. I do believe that.
Our babies were read to from about nine months old......
I, myself, loved to read.... as did my mom. Just passed on the habit.
They were taken to the library very often to select their own books as little tykes. The bookstores were our favorite places to hang out, looking at all the new books, before buying. They now do the same with their own broods.
They all became excellent spellers.......it just comes naturally if one reads.
Also, in elementary school, back in the cave man days, we were taught
phonics (which I also taught to my two children from pre school on)......whereas my husband was not taught phonics in his Catholic school, nor did his mom read to him or take him to the library.
He has evolved into a good speller over the years......mostly from reading
more and also from building his own website.....in general, computers have aided the poor spellers, especially with spellcheck (which I never use, but he does)........
I've always bought him books as gifts, during our long marriage.......
However, since the introduction of the KINDLE, which we both love, he reads voraciously........and again, the spelling does improve the more one reads.
Now, in all fairness to the not so great spellers out there.......sometimes when one is typing very quickly on their keyboards.....a spelling error can occur......even with the best of the best spellers.
To me, it's always the thought that counts. I can read between the lines and figure out what is meant.......even if it is misspelled.
Similar to how a mother understands what her baby is saying, even if no one else does. If a mother didn't respond verbally back to the baby, acknowledging their "message" no matter how babyish the language heard, the child would never learn to speak.........or might even have delayed speech. Ours spoke very early and comprehended language.
They also read very early......way before school began. All from being read to. It just comes naturally.
