Very true. A few years back, a Masters candidate let me read a paper she was writing, to see what I thought of it. I went ahead and corrected all of the spelling mistakes and gramatical errors that I found and handed it back to her.

She looked at the edited article and said "I can't submit that". When I asked why, she said "because they know I can't spell worth a damn and they will know someone helped me and I will get an F"

She submitted the article as is and got a B+. Obviously, she was marked on content and knowledge of the subject, not on her penmanship!

Last I heard, she was working on her PHD. Inability to spell in no way should infer stupidity. We are what we are, no one need be perfect at everything.
