With amazon you are retaining the rights. You can also set it up for POD (print on demand) through amazon as well. If someone wants a paperback version of the book they print it out one copy at a time retailing for around 12 to 15 dollars depending on the length. There are so many people going this route that it is hard to get people to notice your book. You will have to promote it yourself without a publisher to do it for you. If you have a series and make the first one free for a month and it gets listed on kindle buffet people will download the free one and if they like it they will then buy the sequel. Then you get reviews and it can grow from there. This is what my friend in books at amazon advised me.
