At Cflgeek, we recommend that you NEVER open attachments or links that are sent in emails, unless you double and triple check that the senders EMAIL address is one that you trust; This is one of the most common ways that peoples' computers get infected. As you said, identity thieves will often use events like this to try and steal personal information, or gain access to your computer.
