Banging sound? Like pops when drawing water? Sounds like mine a few months ago. It is 7 yrs old. But noise doesn't automatically mean you need replacement.
My noise was caused by build up of crusty material in the tank. Gas tanks have a conical shape at the bottom, so debris collects in the low area and when the heat goes on, things start to bubble up. Thus the noise.
Fixed mine by draining the debris out....a lot cheaper than replacing one.

There are a couple of parts that are required to do this: R/R the drain with a ball fixture (allows bigger opening) and to do that requires a double threaded fitting. The folks at Home Depot or Lowe's should be able to help with the hardware.
Also, follow on/off directions in the warranty paperwork for the gas, and draining sequences. Research on-line too.
If uncomfortable with DIY, get a plumber to do it for you.
