Hi Kitty Litter,
i agree with your method of trap, spay and release. I have been feeding a mom and 4 of her kittens for over a month now. They are now part of my backyard family (squirrels, birds, bunnies) to the dismay of my two indoor, spoiled kitties. I tried for several weeks to use a humane trap to get the mom (Blackie) to the vet to be spayed. Blackie is way too savy; she saw one of the kittens get trapped and so would not go near that trap.
So i tried one last time this past Monday. Our appt. was on Tuesday morning. Well, the scene was funny enough to win 'First prize on America's Funniest Videos. I had taken everything off the lanai and had a white towel in one hand and a broom in the other. The trap door was open and sat in one of the corners. Well it was a combination of a 'bullfight' and a 'boxing match'. Betty the Old One vs. the Great Blackie. Well, I chased with the towel and broom and Blackie ran -around and around avoiding the trap each time. When we tired out, we retreated to our own corners (mine was a folding chair). And when we were rested, we went more rounds. Well, after 8 rounds, we were both exhausted and I decided that Blackie was the winner and loser- because I let her out to reunite with her babies, but she was so happy to be with them. It put a smile on my face. I'm happy to say, Blackie still brings her babies to my door for their meals each day- so we're still 'family' and they're still safe, for now.
