While a new home is being built, it is not uncommon for the laborers to be working seven days a week, frequently without a supervisor. Also, lawn cutters have been known to work on Saturdays and Sundays if there has been inclement weather during the week. Therefore, it wouldn't be that difficult for a worker to learn a resident's schedule, especially in new developments.
As to comments that the Sumter Sheriff's Office is inept and more interested in ticketing folks, sorry, I totally disagree. I've seen several police cars (both marked and unmarked) patrolling Pinellas and its adjoining streets quite a bit lately. As was said, they can't be everywhere at once. So, we do need to be alert and aware for ourselves and our neighbors.
Also, we have had incidents in the past where homes were broken into. There was the girl on the phone in the front while her cohort was breaking into homes from the back on Stillwater a few years ago. Last year, it was thefts of golf clubs, bikes and tools from open garages. I'm sure there have been other crime "sprees" but those are the two I can think of off the top of my head.
All considered, TV is very safe compared to other towns with a population over 80,000. So, we need to be diligent but I don't think we need to over-react or become paranoid. Here's hoping that no one gets hurt trying to protect their home.
