Security systems make noise, however, between the time the security company calls you and gets no response and gets in touch with the police, the culprets have done the damage, grabbed what they want and are gone before the cops ever get there.
Cameras are good, but don't go for cheap. You get what you pay for and inexpensive ones give you poor results if you are trying to I.D. a person or vehicle.

The big advantage of the security system is that most burglars with half a brain will not choose a house with a security system because it might draw too much attention to the criminal activity. Why should they take that chance when there are so many homes that don't have a system and would not add that risk?
