I hope for the best for him. Maybe he should live his life out in the shelter.
I can totally believe your account, because I've been through it with this other dog we had back in the '80s. Something would snap, and he would flip out. Then suddenly he would become docile again. The fact that you see mostly he is on the good side makes it very difficult.
