Just in case you decide to do it on your own, here's a tip. In Venice it is best to stay at a hotel along the grand canal. If not you will be dragging your luggage through the narrow streets and up and down the steps of the many little bridges in the city of Venice to get to your hotel. The further away from the canal you get the more lugging you will have. If you only have 1 piece of luggage each its not too bad but we have been there twice and found staying on the Grand Canal a pleasure. We stayed at the Palazzo Sant Angelo and absolutely loved it. If you are arriving by train you can get off the train walk a few steps and take a water taxi to your hotel or to the nearest taxi stop to your hotel if it is more inland. We don't care for escorted trips either because we like to make our own schedule. If you research everything you can make all the reservations yourself. We have done this throughout Europe. With the European transportation system traveling is a breeze. Enjoy your trip !
