The debate on to have or not to have a gun goes on forever and really solves nothing. To prevent a robbery you need to take action before it occurs. You have to understand a few things about the people that will break into your home.

First they don't respect you otherwise they would not have broken into your home. They may be armed themselves. They maybe high on drugs. If it is in the middle of the night their senses are on a much higher level then yours. Remember you are waking up from sleep and how long in the morning does it take to get your bearings? So if you think your going to wakeup immediately and be John Wayne forget it. Also they do not like surprises. Most of them do not want a confrontation. However if they break in during the night while you are home they probably will attack you if you get in their way. There is a difference between the person that breaks in while no one is home and while some one is sleeping.

Here are a few points that may help:

One you need to be proactive. Secure your sliding door. This is a weak spot do it today. Doing it after the robbery is good but prevented nothing; only maybe the next robbery.

If your going to have contractors in your home don't leave valuable objects out where they can be seen easily. Some of these people may not be the ones that broke in but passed the information on to someone else.

Home Depot or Lowes have window and door alarms that you can install easily. Remember these people do not like surprises. A screeching alarm that goes off when the door is opened is going to scare that average burglar away. If it is the middle of the night it will also wake you and give you time to call 911 and grab the weapon of your choice. And don't go looking for the intruder! If you cannot get out find a good point in the room to take a defensive position. You are not John Wayne! And Please if you do have a gun do not go out to meet the police with the weapon in your hand!

Install security cameras in the house. If someone does breaks in at least you will have a picture of the intruder to give to the police.

Motion sensing lights outdoors are also excellent deterrents.

If you decide to own a gun for self protection. get professional training on how to use it! Practice with it often at the shooting range.

If you are in the back yard doing work. Secure your front door and your garage.

You must be vigilant every hour of every day because these people are looking for a victim and they do not take time off from their agenda. If you look like a target your are a target!
