This post is a follow-up to Post #9 which I wrote on 10/29/13. I was trying to defend Jammie (at least as not being criminal, but definitely being a bad manager). At that time, he was working, although very slowly, on our lanai/sunroom project. Since that time, here is what has happened. Our project never got completed. Jammie stopped showing up around November. Everything was completed except for the windows for the sun room. It took awhile to realize that he wasn't really ever going to finish, as he periodically would send an email saying he was coming over, but then he never showed up.
We were so disappointed. After delving into this further, here is what I found out. First of all, I had checked on his license on the Florida state web site. It says that he IS licensed. So, I called the Sumter County Building Department and they told me that Jammie is no longer allowed to work in Sumter County. When I asked how I would know this, since the Florida web site still shows that he has a valid license, they just told me that Sumter County has filed complaints against him and has forwarded this to the state, but until the state actually acts on these complaints, it will show that he has a license. Also, when we took the permit off of our house (as I wanted to "rebag" it as the original bag was torn), I saw that the name of the contractor on the permit was NOT Jammie Stevens Construction, but a company by the name of "Highly Recommended Builder" (George Atkins) who I found out is Jammie's brother-in-law. We have been in touch with George.
So - my recommendation is to not only check the validity of a license through the web site, but to also contact the Sumter County Building Department and ask them.
As I mentioned in my original post, Jammie had done work for us a few years ago and we had no problems. He also did work for some of our friends, so we were definitely surprised that this second job turned out like this.
