As a retired screenwriter I can simply say that the movie makers are often negative, depressed, lonely people who think that everyone else is... Decision makers at the studio often are young and stupid.
They watch great positive family movies repeatedly knocking the ball out of the park at the box office but insist on pushing their negative political messages.
The movie loses money for the investors but a few arty awards are given to the movie but some European lunatics. The film maker is thrilled and the investors 'write it off' as a loss. Hedge fund money often is looking to lose money.
Everyone is happy.
I can go on forever but every now and then a great script slips through and everyone makes money. That keeps those few people like me working or at least attempting to work.
