A week or so ago my wife and I watched the movie 'Blue Jasmine'. If you are planning on renting the movie read no further I don't want to spoil it for you.

I have to wonder why people make such terribly sad movies? The main character is one of those people who makes one bad choice after another...
- Her crook of a Husband cheated on her extensively and then informs her he is running off with his latest very youthful paramour. "We are in love".
- She informs on his larcenous ways to the FBI, he is arrested, goes to 'the big house' and then promptly hangs himself in his cell
- her diet consist of liberal doses of sedatives with an ample helping of self pity as a side dish.
- she is abusive to her simple waitress sister belittling her choices of mates at every opportunity. When the sister does have a tryst with another fellow she meets at a classy party -he turns out to be married and drops her.
- her husband did a Bernie on the sister and sisters husband 'one chance' lotto winnings
- her Harvard attending stepson learns of his fathers and her actions drops out, hits the drugs and disappears and finally informs her he wants nothing to do with her.
- She meets a charming fellow, lies about her awful history and falls in love. They are outside the jewelry store about to pick out 'the ring' when they run into her sister's ex who outs her. Relationship over!
- The last scene we are left with her sitting on a bench talking to her self ...
clearly desperately in need of institutionalization.

One of the reason's I still watch the movies on TCM, because they made movies that develop characters, and tell a story, that is easy to follow. Some movies made today, you need to read the book first, because it assumes you can read between the lines.

I liked Nebraska that was somewhat dark in tone, and about 2/3 thru the movie, was extremely funny. Great job by Bruce Dern. The audience was laughing quite a bit, and I don't remember that happening too often with other movies.

I loved, "When Harry Met Sally", as it is remeniscent of older movies, with the background music, and that movie was funny. I also like, "Forget Paris" with Billy Crystal and Debra Winger.

Give me a good popcorn movie anyday like, "Raiders of The Lost Ark".

A movie has to be compelling for me to go see it, as the movies are not cheap anymore. I like to be selective. IMHO
