Three hardest languages I had to learn as a child -- Russian, Mandarin, English. The first because of too few vowels and a totally different alphabet. The second because of symbols rather than letters and the use of the throat for many of its sounds. The third because it breaks every rule it has.
And why isn't island pronounced is-land? or Arkansas Ar-kan-sas?
