I used to work for a supplier to the meat processing industry and have seen behind the curtain. I am not denying that the atrocities Jimbo references have actually happened, BUT THEY COULD NOT have occurred at any of the highly efficient, productive and humane facilities I've seen. The kill floor itself is carefully designed to keep the cows calm, and they are dropped with a pneumatic plunger to the skull and the animal dies instantly; without so much as a jerk or sound. The most "gruesome" part is that, though the brain is dead, the heart continues to pump and is used to help "bleed" the cow. I do agree that everyone who eats these products should be aware of what happens before the styrofoam tray. I think you need to have appreciation, and it's hard to appreciate from ignorance. It's interesting that many of those who want us to be chilled by the screams of lambs will fight tooth and nail to remove requirements for a pregnant woman to see a sonogram of her baby before having an abortion.
