Some have said that Google targets people based on the searches they do. So, for example, if you searched "cancer cures" they will advertise products and services pertaining to cancer.
I'm in good health but I'm interested in health related issues. So I frequently do searches about various diseases, just out of curiosity. If they do advertising based on my searches, they are most likely wasting their time. They know what you search, but they don't always know what your motivation is for doing the search. It's just a guess on their part.
