They are technically and properly called Multi-Nodal Paths, but commonly called our Golf Cart Paths. We would want to center line stripe them, and possibly edge stripe them, for safety purposes and possibly for cost savings.
A study by the University of Iowa's Institute For Transportation found that there was a correlation between retroflective line striping and accident reduction on roadways. The Federal Highway Administration states line striping improves safety and prevents roadway departure crashes. The Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices states line stripping can help 'reduce head-on collisions and improve road safety'. Some industry studies show that proper line stripping can reduce accident frequency by 29% while a government study (Transport Research Report 1334) states that 'each dollar spent on pavement striping yields $60 in benefits'.
Why would we ever want to NOT stripe our multi-nodal paths?
