I spend a lot of time in the Middle East for work. Egypt has always been one of my favorite places. The vast majority of the Egyptian people are very friendly and love the Americans. Unfortunately, that isn't newsworthy.
You must be careful, know where you are and what is going on around you. I was there the weekend of the Arab Spring a few years ago, during the original protests. We just stayed away from the square and actually left the country the following Monday. But never felt personally in danger.
I have always felt safe walking the streets, and market place in Cairo on my own. Probably would not do that now.
Enjoy your visit. The pyramids, and ruins are thought provoking. Especially if you have seen the pyramids and Mayan ruins in Mexico and Belize. The similarities are eerie.
But do be careful and don't draw attention to yourself with open display of who you are and where you are from.
