Most elderly people are vitamin D3 deficient because they either don't get enough sun and/or their skin is no longer able produce it. It seems we slowly lose our ability to produce it as we get older. So don't count on the sun doing anything.
I made it a point to get a little sun everyday before my first blood test for D3. The result of that test was a score of 8 whereas it should have been at least 30.
