There is no peace of mind with a surge protecter. Lightning is our problem here, and they don't do much.
We had significant electrical damage from a nearby lightning strike last year. One of the first things that blew out was the SECO whole home surge protecter. They did replace it, and paid us $500 toward the appliances that were taken out. However, that $500 would have been covered by my homeowners insurance, so it was a wash. Plus, lightning through the water lines is what took out some of our appliances. For example, just the ice maker in the refer went out, all the rest of the electronics were good.
Lightning comes into the house any way it can. Water lines, cable lines, phone lines and electrical lines. There is no rhyme or reason to what you are going to lose. In our case, the claim was around $3,500.
Also, look at the fine print for all your surge suppressors. No protection against lightening.
