Let's wait until the investigation is completed. It just seems a convenient story. I hope I am wrong but it happens. Now don't go jumping all over me I am just bringing up the possibility.
Most businesses deposit their daily cash and receipts after closing. If this was just an employee why would he have access to cash that late. If it was a manager that may be different but again lets wait and see what the investigation finds out.
