When my wife first started playing, the field marshal (or what ever they are called), told my wife to tee off and try one or two shots and pick up and putt the remaining three shots. For starters, the putting is the most fun.
She is now a pretty good golfer. She uses a tee on the fairway shots to improve her chances of making the greens in two or three on the long holes.
