Luckily that was an outdoor performance! If the 1812 Overture is performed indoors, there could be problems you never expected!
My brother was a music grad student when they were perorming the 1812 overture. Tom's job was to fire a real cannon (small but powerful) in the small room next to the stage, at precisely the right times.
The first blast of the cannon was so loud in that tiny space that his ears started ringing and he couldn't hear the orchestra to time the rest of the blasts. He just hummed it to himself and hoped for the best - worked out pretty well.
