DC motors are different in the fact that they have a set of carbon brushes that ride on a copper device in the motor called a commutator. The carbon brushes waste about 10% the power it takes for the motor to operate.

AC motors are brushless induction three phase motors that provide more torque with less internal ware. They do cost more to purchase and have larger motor controllers. The plus side is they produce more power and operate on less energy therefore battery use is less per mile.
