I would not have complained to management but I would not have returned to that resturant knowing that some customers get special treatment while others do not and what makes me not one of the special ones.

I think it was just the luck of the draw. MikeV's wife got an extra pour because the bottle happened to not have another full glass in it. It's common practice that has been going on for decades. IMO they are not treating anyone unfairly. Maybe one day they will be the ones to get a little extra. Will they turn it down?
The people in the next table just happened not to luck out, and they were ticked off. And mean about it. You're right, they shouldn't go back if they think they were treated unfairly. But to raise a fuss get the waitress in trouble? Unforgivable.
