One way to keep my phone number "out of circulation" is to not give it away if at all possible . . . say I am filling out a form and they want my phone number. If it is really unnecessary for them to have it, I put my area code plus 555-1212. Same at Target, or other department stores that ask for my telephone number when checking me out. The clerk sometimes gives me a dirty look, sometimes an amused one, what do I care?
I rarely answer my phone if I don't recognize the number, but if I accidentally do I always tell them to remove me from their list and then after hanging up immediately block the number.
As an aside, I have a Verizon air card, which is also associated with a telephone number, and someone is regularly sending it messages that they are withdrawing $230.45 out of my checking account. This happens about once a week. I don't know who they think they are sending that message to, but no money is being taken out of my account. I just delete the messages.
