Gracie -- what you briefly described could very well be string algae. It's green and disgusting although it's very easy to remove. The only problem is it keeps coming back. if what you have is stringy and green, I can send you some info to possibly help cure it but if you have birds and other wildlife drinking the water, you have to be careful with what you use.
