Default Watch Out for Motorcycles

If you drive a vehicle here in the Villages you will see a lot of motorcycles and scooters. The following was put out by Community Traffic Safety Team (www.ctst.org) and funded by Florida DOT.

Here is what you can do as a driver.

1. EYE CONTACT- Motorcyclists make eye contact often to feel confident that auto drivers see them.
Please give a nod to acknowledge them.

2. SIGNALS - Some motorcycles do not have automatic turn signal cancellations.
If you see a cycle coming and the signal is active, please wait for the cycle to pass.

3. DISTANCE - Motorcyclists like to leave a larger safety space around them, allowing more time to react.
Please do not cut in, eliminating needed safe distance.

4.SAFETY IN NUMBERS -Motorcyclists often travel in groups.
If you see a group of cyclists, give them the right of way, allowing them to stay together.

5. LARGE VANS -Larger vehicles can conceal a single motorcycle traveling behind it.
Please take an extra moment after a larger vehicle passes before you begin your turn behind it.

6. CIGARETTES - Cigarette butts thrown out a window may land on and burn a motorcyclist.
Please dispose of cigarette butts in a trash receptacle.

7. BLIND SPOTS - Motorcyclists can be hidden easily.
Please take a second and LOOK TWICE-don't rely solely on your mirrors for information.

8. WEATHER - Rain and sunglare can make a single motorcycle invisible.
Please take an extra moment to make sure your way is clear.

For those that take the time to read this, I THANK YOU. You may save a life, maybe even mine. Thanks
