I am confused, you are using a WIRED internet connection in your house? My suggestion, if your equipment supports it, put in a wireless (Wlan) router off your modem. While the telephone wires look similar to Ethernet wires, they are not the same, and it may be contributing to your problems. Also, the RJ11 (telephone) jacks are similar but not the same as RJ45 (Ethernet jacks).
Black Box, L-Com, and a few other electronic supply stores have coax to Ethernet converters. I do not recall the price.
