If we look back on the succession of our conflicts including World War II, World War I, the American Civil War, and so on and so on, all the way back to the Dark Ages, we see that homo sapiens breed conflict. Human beings, I'm sorry to say, for all of our boasting about how superior we are to the rest of life forms, seem to be judgmental and violent by nature. The only difference today is that most of the conflict and killing in today's world is done in the name of a religion. Now before you get riled up, I'm a Christian, but I'm just telling you what I observe.

What can we do? Try to overcome our nature and thus stop being so judgmental, and stop reacting to perceived affronts with violence. Teach our children to see the world in a different way.

Good luck with that.
Wars are often fought by people who think they have the grand plan for a perfect society on earth but with the "crooked timber of humanity" you cannot really build it. http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Immanuel_Kant

Except for the possibility of war with Russia because of Putin's over-reaching, I really do not see the world in a worse shape than a few years ago. There have certainly been much more frightening periods of US history than 2014. 1864, 1914, 1934, 1964 for instance.
