I have become a big history bluff with the biograghies of famous people:

1. Team of Rivals - The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Book much better than the movie, and she won the Pultizer Prize.
2. FDR by Jean Edward Smith. Covers FDR from birth to death. Most comprehensive book on FDR.
3. Truman by David McCollugh Excellent book of a man who was a true patriot and accomplished a great deal for our country in troubled times.
4. Grant - Jean Edward Smith on a great soldier and a scandal ridden President, although he was never part of the corruption in his administration. Manual on warfare, still used by West Point students.
5. No Ordinary Time - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt: The Home front in WWII.
6. Franklin and Lucy - Joseph E. Persico. President Roosevelt , Mrs Rutherfurd, and the Other Remarkable Woman in his Life. Lucy was with FDR in Warm Springs Georgia when he died. Met Joe at a WWII club function.
7. The Bully Pulpit - Doris Kearns Goodwin. Theordore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft and The Golden Age of Journalism. Only read 288 pages of 752 total pages but Doris really makes history come alive. I've got to finish this excellent book.

I can't say enough about Goodwin and Smith as they both thoroughly research their subjects. I found the little things to be very interesting and compelling, as well as the big things like FDR's true love of his life was Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd. Everyone she came into contact with Lucy, loved her gentle ways. FDR's relationship with Missy Lehand, (Magarite), and her total dedication of her life, to him. Grant ordering General Sheridan to make peace with the Indian nation, and Sheridan not listening to him, that culminated into to the massacre of the Indian Nation.

These books are very well written and long so put your reading shoes on.
