Why don't you try a finch feeder, filled with Thistle seed. They are small yellow birds and hang upside down to eat. They are beautiful, and entertaining. We had them in our yard for many years and never saw a rat under the feeder. Although, Doves would eat up the spillage on the ground.

If you have problems with large birds trying to eat from the feeder take out the black plastic sticks from the tube and cut about an inch off. The larger birds feet will not be able to stay on the perch.

If you hang the feeder off a tall Sheppard hook, rub the pole down with vase line to keep squirrels away. It's comical to watch them try climbing the slippery pole. Eventually they give up and go away.
