We skated on real ponds and nobody fell through the ice and drowned. We fell in plenty (it was shallow)but we just shut up and went home. Drama was not allowed.
We all stuck together, no tattling. My mother always said "One of you make up a story and the rest of you swear to it. Do you think I'm stupid?" From experience, YES is the wrong answer.-LOL
We had jobs, part-time after school and summers we did yard work, shovelled snow. When we were old enough we worked after school in stores.
I think the biggest thing was we had pride. We were proud of our family, our towns and our country. There was a feeling of accomplishment that I see lacking today.
